2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
The bible is God’s only and final word to us concerning the truth about His plan of salvation for us. His word provides us with all we need to know about life, death and beyond. Even if we did not have the bible, He has declared His presence through His creation, and our compelling need to know our Creator. God chose to give us His thoughts, instructions, and knowledge through the written word. The consistent story of the bible was written by various authors over a period of about 1500 years and will never be added to or taken from. The bible describes itself as a mystery to those who do not know Christ, but for the believer it is a living word waiting to come alive in our conscience, thoughts, feelings, and actions. Believers have the Holy Spirit to help us understand the bible.
The verse above directs us to study the scriptures, not just read them. Bible study is the fundamental activity of the church. Sunday School gives you an opportunity to study God’s word with others. Here are some suggestions that will help you with your personal study of the bible.
1) As you study a verse or passage, read the scriptures leading up to the passage so you can understand the context.
2) Find out who wrote the passage, why, who it was addressed to, and ask yourself what it means to you?
3) Does the passage contain a promise, instruction, or caution?
4) Pray as you study and assume that the passage was written directly to you. What is it telling you to do?
Other suggestions are to use a commentary, bible dictionary, other reputable translations, and devotional materials. God promises that if we study the scriptures we will be a workman for God who is confident in our faith and knowledgeable of the truth.
Make a decision today to experience the adventure of studying God’s word. It will change your life.
