“…But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15b
I want to have a word with our husbands and fathers about our role as a family leader. The Bible is filled with enough scripture that indicates you and I are to be the spiritual leaders in our home. God has given you and me the nature and inclination to work and provide for the welfare and safety of our family. There is no doubt that we as fathers and husbands would give our life for our family, so why would we neglect to be a strong spiritual leader for our family?
The verse above was spoken by Joshua as he stood before Israel and put before them a choice. Would they continue to live in the past, or will they chose to serve the Lord who has a greater purpose for them. As a man of God, you and I must establish a firm commitment to declare that we will serve the Lord before our family…no matter what. Today, there are attempts by an ungodly way of thinking to redefine what a family is and who the leader is. We need to “man-up” and lead our family in the ways of the Lord.
How can you and I do this? Start a personal prayer and devotion time, have devotions with your family, encourage your family to pray about important matters, attend and be involved in church regularly, study the Bible, lead your family in a way that would be pleasing to God, set godly priorities in your life, love and respect your family. This is not all you can do, but you get the idea. Will you stand firm today and declare to your family, friends, and God that you will serve the Lord?
